Omar Hegazy presentation in Strategic Session 21
In Strategic Session 21, โAccelerating the deployment of recharging infrastructure for electric vehicles: challenges and opportunities,โ Omar Hegazy (VUB) and Alessandro Bernardini (Iveco Group) set out the current state of battery-electric truck and charging-infrastructure deployment in Europe and the role of Megawatt Charging Systems in a fully integrated zero-emission freight ecosystem.
During his intervention, Omar presented ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐-๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฐ๐ธ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ถ๐ป๐ณ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฟ๐๐ฐ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐น๐ผ๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ in Europe, highlighting the role of Megawatt Charging Systems (MCS) in enabling a fully integrated zero-emission freight ecosystem.
He also showed how theAEVETO ??๐น๐๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ท๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ผ๐ด๐ฒ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ณ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐๐ถ๐น๐น ๐๐น๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฑ๐ผ๐๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐น๐ผ๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ผ-๐ฒ๐บ๐ถ๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฐ๐ธ๐, from infrastructure readiness and investment needs to operational planning, interoperability and data sharing.
Building on insights from ZEFES use cases, Omar also presented how the FLEXMCS hub concept can support more flexible, efficient and cost-effective charging operations, contributing to the broader ambition of reducing costs and accelerating real-world deployment.
The panel discussion, moderated by Eric von Breska from DG MOVE, raised several key priorities for the future of charging infrastructure:
โก Flexibility and higher infrastructure utilisation as drivers for faster deployment
๐ Cybersecurity and secure data exchange for public and private charging networks
๐ Digital tools using real-time data to improve mission planning and reduce Total Cost of Ownership
๐๏ธ The role of governments through subsidies, regulation, protocols and standards
๐ Bidirectional charging opportunities, including G2V and V2G testing
๐ค Data sharing, AI and European mobility data spaces as enablers of a more efficient ecosystem
